Bruce Museum Science Lecture Series: International Year of Forests 2011

The New England Forest Ecosystem: Ecological Values, Threats and Future?
Prof. Gene E. Likens, Blue Planet Prize winner, internationally acclaimed ecologist, and pioneer in the study of acid rain

In celebration of the United Nations' International Year of Forests 2011 and coming on the heels of extreme weather and heated discussions about tree removal by CL&P, Prof. Gene Likens will present a timely discussion that explores the impact human activity has on our local forests and the impact that the degradation of forests has on us.

Prof. Likens is the founding director and president emeritus of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, NY, and Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. He has been a distinguished member of the US National Academy of Sciences for over thirty years. He is also member of the Royal Swedish, Danish, and Austrian Academies of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. In 2001, he was awarded the US National Medal of Science. Prof. Likens is known for his thought-provoking lectures and his ability to engage the public in the science of ecology.

The lecture is free to Bruce Museum and Greenwich Tree Conservancy members and students with identification. Non-members are $5 at the door. Reservations are required; please call 203-869-0376, ext. 420. Light refreshments and an opportunity to meet Prof. Likens precede the lecture, which begins promptly at 7:30 pm.

This is the final talk in a series of talks and walks organized by the Bruce Museum and Greenwich Tree Conservancy held in recognition of the International Year of Forests 2011. We encourage you to visit the United Nations International Year of Forests 2011 website, http://www.un.org/en/events/iyof2011/ , for additional forest information including the international activities planned for 2011.

The lecture series, held in the Bruce Museum lecture gallery, is supported by Robert and Gale Lawrence, the Marjorie Sims Lawrence Memorial Fund, the Greenwich Tree Conservancy, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Elser. Reservations are required and begin Nov. 25. Call 203-869-0376, ext. 420. The lecture is free to Museum and GTC members and students with identification. Non-members: $5 at the door.
