Science Lecture: International Year of Forests 2011

“Solutions to Deforestation: A Global Perspective from the United Nations”
by Benjamin Singer, Forest Policy Officer, United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat.

Since October 2009, Dr. Singer has been working at the United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat in New York. In particular, he manages the Facilitative Process on forest financing, which aims to assist developing countries to mobilize funds for sustainable forest management. So far, his work has focused primarily on Africa, least developed countries, small island developing states, and low forest cover countries. Benjamin Singer graduated with a BA in anthropology at Cambridge University and an MSc in Nature Conservation at University College, London. In 2009 he completed his PhD at the Paris Institute of Political Studies and the French Research Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIRAD), which focused on a comparative analysis of forest policies in Brazil, Cameroon and Indonesia. He has travelled extensively to forests of Brazil, Central Africa, Madagascar and Southeast Asia, both for his studies and consultancies.
