Fred Elser First Sunday Science at the Seaside Center: Cancelled
Sunday, April 5, 2020 — 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Each drop of water in Long Island Sound hosts a diverse microbial community. Knowing which microbes thrive in different portions of the Sound helps us evaluate the impacts of natural and human-led changes on these environments.
Dr. Luciana Santoferrara, a marine microbiologist working at the University of Connecticut, uses microscopic and DNA signatures to explore how different types of microbes (bacteria, archaea, and protists) respond to environmental factors linked to pollution and warming. In this talk, she will show us how tracking microbial indicators of water quality (such as decomposers, red-tide algae and waterborne parasites) is key to monitoring the health of the ecosystem we live beside.
Family activities from 1:30 – 3:30 PM.
