Greenwich Decorative Arts Society Lecture

Monday, November 7, 2016 — 1:15pm - 12:00am

“Georgia O’Keefe and the Women Artists, Photographers, and Collectors of the Stieglitz Circle”

A lecture by Lisa M. Messinger, Independent Scholar and Retired Curator of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Refreshments immediately follow the lecture

The lecture will focus on some of the fascinating women painters (Georgia O’Keeffe and Florine Stettheimer), photographers (Anne Brigman and Marjorie Content), and art collectors (Agnes Meyer and Mabel Dodge Luhan) who associated with Alfred Stieglitz and his New York galleries in the first decade of the 20th century.  While few attained the fame of Georgia O’Keeffe, each embodied the spirit of “new woman” in forging their own path to professional and personal independence.

Lisa M. Messinger is an Independent Scholar and Retired Curator of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art. She is an expert on the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, she has also published and lectured widely on the artists of the Stieglitz Circle.  In 2011-2012 she produced a major exhibition and collection catalogue for the Metropolitan Museum titled Stieglitz and His Artists: Matisse to O’Keeffe.
