Marianne Smith Memorial Lecture: Design in Murals, Pottery, Architecture and Gold of Early Farmers (5000 to 6000 BC) by oceanographer Dr. William B.F. Ryan, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University.
The talk focuses on the interconnections between art and science and will feature art from Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria and Iraq created at the time when early farmers settled in villages and practiced a culture with features in common. A hypothesis will be presented that widespread similarities in both art and DNA extracted from skeletons can be explained by migrations from an ancestral homeland located on the margins of a former Black Sea freshwater lake.
