“iCreate!” Teen Art

May 9, 2010 - May 23, 2010

The exhibition “iCreate!”Teen Art features 33 prize-winning artworks by regional high school students. The show, which is held in the Museum’s Bantle Lecture Gallery, is organized by the Bruce Museum’s Youth Committee. On view will be a juried selection of two-dimensional pieces including paintings, drawings, mixed media, and hand-drawn or hand-painted digital works by area teens, who were invited to submit art for the competitive show. Working with Volunteer Program Manager Mary Ann Lendenmann, the Bruce Museum Youth Committee contacted area high school art departments, distributed fliers, and set up a Facebook group to invite participation by teen artists.

An independent three-member jury from the Bruce Museum staff and Greenwich Arts Council is judging the work and will award cash prizes of $500, $250, and $100 for the top three entries, as well as two honorable mentioned pieces and one Bruce Youth Committee Choice of $50. The original art of only the top 33 winning entries will be mounted in the Museum’s gallery. However, digital images of all the entries will be shown on a monitor in the exhibition. The digital submissions will be compiled on a DVD and set to the music of the Legends Rock & Jazz Bands, popular student ensembles directed by Forbes Music Company, and recorded by Acoustic Refuge Studios. The DVD also will be available at the Museum

The Bruce Museum’s Youth Committee, which is organizing the show, is a new student-based group at the Museum. It began in the summer of 2009 as an offshoot of the Bruce Museum’s Youth Volunteers program. Currently consisting of approximately twelve Greenwich High School students, the Youth Committee is drawn from a group of over 130 youth volunteers who participate in a variety of activities at the Bruce Museum throughout the year. Bruce Museum Youth Committee members have logged nearly 2,000 hours to date participating in Bruce Museum activities. Members take an active role in Museum programs and exhibitions. In the past year, they have produced an audio tour for Museum’s permanent exhibition, jointly produced videos of the galleries in conjunction with students from the New York School for the Deaf, held a leadership role in raising funds for the recent exhibition highlighting antique world maps, and enabled that show to become part of the high school curriculum. In addition to organizing the “iCreate!”Teen Art show, they are also planning an upcoming Natural World Celebration Family Day in June. The Bruce Museum Youth Committee membership currently includes Gillis Baxter, David Belmonte, Nicole DeSantis, Marina Kaneko, Andrew Lewis,Maria Lycouris, Edward Narh, Phuntsok Rinkartsang, James Utton, Daniel Williams, and Youstina Youssef.

The exhibition “iCreate!”Teen Art, is supported by the Charles M. and Deborah G. Royce Exhibition Fund. Please note that this exhibition is held in the Bantle Lecture Gallery, which may be closed for viewing due to programs taking place.
