This piece of calcite was once embedded in a grand “mineralogical” fireplace in the Welcome House of Bigelow’s nature study campus, ArcAdiA, and headquarters for the Agassiz Association located in Sound Beach (now Old Greenwich, Connecticut). Minerals from all over the world were incorporated from floor to ceiling around the fireplace and chimney. Before the building was demolished in 1979, Jack Clark (then the Bruce Museum Director) was invited to survey the minerals, and he removed this piece of calcite and a large gypsum crystal for the Museum’s collection.
