Bruce Experiences: Labor in Opera

LABOR IN OPERA: VERISMO & REALISM

In connection with The Art of Work: Painting Labor in Nineteenth Century Denmark we are delighted to have a performance by Divaria Productions, a group of operatic singers. Labor in Opera is an original concert illustrating the beauty of “labor” in opera through the context of Italian Verismo.

DANIEL SUTIN

Dramatic Baritone Daniel Sutin’s career has taken him onto the prestigious stages of the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, L’Opera de Montreal, Canadian Opera Company, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Washington National Opera, and the Spoleto, Savonlinna, and Lincoln Center Festivals. Recent performances include covering the title role in Wozzeck at Canadian Opera Company. Conte di Luna (Il Trovatore) at Boheme Opera of New Jersey, Alfio (Cavalleria Rusticana)in the Classical Concert Series at Seton Hall University, Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) at Boheme Opera, the title role in Rigoletto at Opera North, Don Fernando (Fidelio) at the Polish National Opera, and Baron Scarpia in the Northern Lights Music Festival’s critically acclaimed production of Tosca; this last was the first North American opera production to be performed with social distancing. In the 2019-20 season, Mr. Sutin again covered the title role in Wozzeck at the Metropolitan Opera, where he had performed the role in 2014 to standing ovations. This season also marked his debut with Arizona Opera as Giorgio Germont in La Traviata. In 2017-18, Sutin’s engagements included Baron Scarpia in Boston Lyric Opera’s new production of Tosca, Giacomo (Giovanna d’Arco) at Odyssey Opera, and covering the role of Alberich (Siegfried) at Lyric Opera of Chicago. In addition, he also covered Alberich in San Francisco Opera’s complete Ring Cycle.

In previous seasons at the Met, Mr. Sutin also covered the title role in Wozzeck and sang the One-Eyed Brother (Die Frau ohne Schatten). Sutin debuted the role of Jokanaan (Salome) with the Detroit Symphony, sang Don Fernando (Fidelio) with Cincinnati Opera, Iago (Otello)with the Phoenicia Festival of Voice, Enrico Ashton (Lucia di Lammermoor )with Boheme Opera of New Jersey, and covered both the title role in Wozzeck and Alberich (Das Rheingold) at Lyric Opera of Chicago. In addition, Sutin covered the role of Alberich (Der Ring des Nibelungen) at Washington National Opera during the 2015-16 season.

ASHLEY GALVANI BELL

Hailed by OPERA NEWS as “delightful”, Ashley Galvani Bell has been performing from an early age, starting at age 9 as a member of the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus and making her Off-Broadway debut at 16 in the world premiere of the musical The Golden Touch. Ms. Bell has since performed as a soloist in the United States, Italy, Spain, France and Russia. This season has included her debut in DENMARK with Operaen i Midten as the title role in KLARA, her debut as Leonora in Il Trovatore with Boheme Opera New Jersey, her debut as Micaela in Carmen with Bay Street Theatre & her signature role of Cio Cio San, which she has performed throughout the US, in both New Jersey and California. 2024 included singing with New York City Opera in both a 100 year Puccini Anniversary concert and a dance production of Klara directed by acclaimed Broadway choreographer Richard Stafford, returning to ABAO Bilbao covering both Mimi and Musetta in La Bohème, singing the title role in Pedro Halffter's Penelope's Dream at the Ateneo de Madrid & in Logroño, singing Cio Cio San at Bay Street Theatre and Mimi at McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California, and joining Teatro de la Maestranza for La Bella Susona. Highlights of 2023 included her debut with ABAO Bilbao Opera as Fiordiligi in Cosi Fan Tutte where ProOpera highlighted her "superabundance of talent", her debut with Teatro Perez Galdos in Gran Canaria, Spain as the title role of Klara, singing Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly with both Bohème Opera New Jersey and Daytona Beach Symphony Society, her debut in Milan, Italy as soprano soloist in Exultate Jubilate with Orchestra UNIMI and Violetta in La Traviata, the title role in the world premiere of Penelope's Dream as well as Soprano soloist in Zemlinsky's Lyrische Symphonie all with Spain's festival Musica en Villafranca.

In 2022, Ashley made a successful debut with Seville's Teatro de la Maestranza as Violetta in La Traviata, joined ABAO Opera Bilbao in productions of La Voix Humaine and Zemlinsky’s Eine Florentische Tragödie and originated the title role in the world premiere of Pedro Halffter's opera about artificial intelligence Klara in both Spain and Harvard University with Beckmesser citing her “well-colored timbre, full of attractive vocal substance. Other notable performances have included her Carnegie Hall debut as soprano soloist in Hadyn’s “Nelson” Mass and Schubert’s Mass in C with MidAmerica Productions and her critically acclaimed performances as Elle in La Voix Humaine in both Spain and the US, where Eduardo Aisa praised her "large voice, dark in her low notes and shimmering in the upper register, with a powerful and overwhelming middle voice and furthermore with world class acting that ignited her performance with expression." Ashley is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Yale University, a winner of Yale’s Browne Irish Performing Arts Award and speaks five languages fluently.
