Rohini Devasher: Solar Poetics

August 22–November 29, 2026

Experience One Hundred Thousand Suns, Rohini Devasher's immersive and powerful video installation at the Bruce Museum, arriving fall, 2026.

Rohini Devasher (b. 1978, New Delhi) is an internationally acclaimed artist working at the intersection of art and science. A longtime amateur astronomer, Devasher has built a distinguished practice investigating ecology, cosmic space, and atmospheric science through video, installation, drawing, and printmaking.

One Hundred Thousand Suns (2023) weaves together more than a century of solar observation in a mesmerizing four-channel video installation. Artist Rohini Devasher layers historical records from India's Kodaikanal Solar Observatory with contemporary footage and her own decade of astronomical research, creating a meditation on how we observe and record phenomena that exceed human perception.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a selection of Devasher's Shadow Portraits and Sol Drawings—intimate works on copper created with fumage, a technique of drawing with smoke. Using her kitchen stove and candle smoke, Devasher creates patterns ranging from solar flares and sunspots to plumage-like growths, their surfaces shifting between blue-purple hues and golden copper. These works reveal her patient, handmade process alongside the monumental film installation.
