Designed by Philip Johnson (1906-2005) and built in 1952, the Schlumberger Research Center Administration Building, known locally as the Philip Johnson Building, was Johnson’s first commercial project. Commissioned after a visit to the Glass House by Schlumberger executive Henri Doll and his wife Annette Schlumberger, the single-story building served as the Schlumberger Research headquarters until 2006. The building now houses the design firm BassamFellows, who fully restored the building winning prestigious preservation awards from docomomo and Preservation CT.
The Schlumberger Research Center was placed in the CT woods, 55 miles from New York City to provide better living and working conditions for the small staff of scientists and patent lawyers and to take advantage of lower taxes and land costs to build a building (and ultimately a campus) that would work. The building is an early example of a corporation choosing to locate executives outside the city.
The rectangular building made of steel, glass, and brick is organized with perimeter private offices surrounding a glass-enclosed core with a landscaped courtyard. The building is flooded with natural light and all interior spaces have a direct connection to nature – including the hallway with nearly 80 skylights throughout.
When BassamFellows took over the building in 2017 it had sat empty for over 10 years. There was extensive water damage to the floors and ceiling, and years of deferred maintenance. The building is now completely renovated and restored, honoring the original intent of Johnson. The building is a testament to the timelessness of good design. With wellness concerns a top priority for office design post pandemic, the building continues to provide a modern, comfortable, and uplifting working environment.

El edificio llevaba más de 10 años vacío cuando BassamFellows se hizo cargo de él en 2017. El agua provocó mucho daños en los pisos y el techo, y habían pasado muchos años sin hacerle mantenimiento. Ahora, el edificio está completamente renovado y restaurado, lo que honra la intención original de Johnson. El edificio es un testimonio de la atemporalidad del buen diseño. Después de la pandemia, la preocupación por el bienestar se convirtió en una de las principales prioridades para el diseño de oficinas, por eso, el edificio brinda un entorno de trabajo moderno, cómodo y estimulante.
