Wadsworth Atheneum - Avery Court

The Wadsworth Atheneum is one of the oldest public art museums in the country; it was founded in 1842 and opened its doors in 1844. The modern history of the Wadsworth Atheneum began in 1927 with the appointment of A. Everett “Chick” Austin Jr. as director. During Austin’s tenure, he established the Wadsworth as a pioneering modern art museum. The addition of the Avery Memorial Building, which opened in 1934, marked a transformative moment in American architectural history, reflective of modernizing trends in art and design. Designed in collaboration with Benjamin Wistar Morris and his firm, Austin focused his energy on the interior courtyard, known as Avery Court. The design process took several years and differences of opinion between Austin, the Board, and the architects resulted in several construction delays. The Board envisioned that the new addition to mirror the Beaux Arts style of the adjacent Morgan Memorial completed in 1915.

Avery Court is the first International Style interior in an American museum. The three-story rectangular space features clean lines, cantilevered balconies, and minimal ornamentation. At center sits a fountain displaying Pietro Francavilla’s eight-foot marble sculpture Venus with a Nymph and Satyr (1600). The glass ceiling provides simulated natural light. The second and third floors include overlooks so that visitors can gain a bird's eye view of the fountain below. The galleries in the Avery Memorial display noted European and American artworks including surrealist masterworks by Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, and Yves Tanguy.

The Avery Court opened on February 6, 1934, with a groundbreaking art exhibition. The opening show, curated by Austin, was the first museum retrospective (career long) exhibition of modern artist Pablo Picasso. Guests who attended the opening were leading figures in the art world including modernist architect Philip Johnson, art historian Alfred Barr, and socialite Abby Aldrich Rockefeller.
