Black Bear, Ursus americanus

British Columbia, Canada, Bruce Museum Collection 2010.06 Gift of the Koontz family

This impressive black bear is one of five specimens in the Bruce Museum collections. Black bears vanished from Connecticut by the mid 19th century as forests were cleared. In the 1980s, black bears returned to the state and began establishing resident populations. This specimen, however, was taken in the Kootenay Range of British Columbia in 1978.
