Common Loon, Gavia immer

Bruce Museum Collection 2015.06

Common loons breed on lakes in the summer and migrate to the coast in the winter. This individual is in winter plumage. Summer birds have solid black head feathers and a black-and-white checkerboard back pattern. This bird came from Wild Wings Rehab and was mounted as part of the Bruce Museum’s longstanding program of salvaging specimens through partnerships with wildlife rehabilitators for education and research
