Pyrite on Calcite,

Chenzhou, China Bruce Museum Collection 2019.4.26 Gift of Robert R. Wiener

When water is saturated with the right substances, minerals can precipitate out of the solution and start growing on any surface, even other minerals. In this specimen, large calcite crystals formed and were later encrusted with a coating of tiny pyrite crystals, giving the edges of the calcite the appearance of having been dusted with golden snow.
