Bernar Venet’s Indeterminate Line consists of several arc-shaped, interlocking forms suggesting a drawing in three-dimensional space. The French conceptual artist has described this series of sculptures as “the result of improvised, intuitive, empirical work.” Inspired by his interest in mathematics and scientific concepts, he bends rigid steel into coiled, energetic configurations that appear as though they could spring to life at any moment. Here, the industrial material contrasts with the sculpture’s organic, spiraling shape, playing on the visual tensions between weight and fluidity, order and spontaneity.
