The Science of the Sonambient, with Dr. Marin Sullivan

Join us for a presentation by Dr. Marin R. Sullivan, Director of the Harry Bertoia Catalogue Raisonné, and delve into the profound impact and intimate narratives embedded within the life and work of the acclaimed artist and designer Harry Bertoia. Known primarily for his commissioned sculptures and groundbreaking use of sound as a sculptural medium, Bertoia's extensive creative output resonates far beyond the confines of traditional art spaces. Drawing from the vast collection of the Harry Bertoia Foundation, including treasures from the Sonambient Barn on Bertoia's Pennsylvania property, as well as select private and public collections in Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut, Dr. Sullivan will explore the objects that become conduits for rich, intimate stories of creation, use, and appreciation.

During Bruce Presents: Bertoia- The Science of the Sonambient Dr. Sullivan will skillfully weave together the threads of art, design, science and personal narrative, inviting the audience to embark on a journey through the transformative and deeply resonant world of Harry Bertoia's sculptural practice. This event will be livestreamed.

About Dr. Sullivan:

Marin R. Sullivan, PhD, is a Chicago-based art historian, curator, consultant, educator, and writer. She specializes in the histories of modern and contemporary sculpture, especially its interdisciplinary, intermedial dialogues with photography, design, and the built environment. Sullivan is the author of Alloys: American Sculpture and Architecture at Midcentury (Princeton University Press, 2022) and Sculptural Materiality in the Age of Conceptualism (Routledge, 2017) as well as numerous catalogues, essays, and articles. Sullivan is the Director of the Harry Bertoia Catalogue Raisonné and is co-curating Isamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer,” scheduled to open at the High Museum in 2026. She currently serves on the Board of Docomomo US/Chicago and is a lecturer and guest curator at DePaul University.
