Thursday, May 23, 2024, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM, Gale and Robert H. Lawrence, Jr., and Pamela and Robert Goergen Auditorium

During this program, Artist-in-Residence Kimberly Klauss will delve into the profound influence of two iconic figures in the art world: George Morrison, a seminal Native American artist known for his abstract landscapes and powerful use of color and form, and McArthur Binion, a celebrated abstract artist known for his grid-based compositions and exploration of identity.  Klauss will share personal reflections on how Morrison and Binion's work has impacted her own artistic vision.

From participating in the Product Design Program at Stanford University to competing on national British television on Sky Portrait Artist of the Year,  Kimberly Klauss has traveled around the world and back to serve as the Inaugural Artist-in-Residence at the Bruce Museum. On Thursday May 23 at 6pm, join us as we hear more about Klauss’s extraordinary journey and her life as a working artist.

Over the course of her residency, Klauss was asked to respond to two works on loan from the Art Bridges Foundation, Collage X Landscape by George Morrison, a seminal Native American artist known for his abstract landscapes and powerful use of color and form, and DNA: Sepia V by McArthur Binion, a celebrated abstract artist known for his grid-based compositions and exploration of identity. During this program, Klauss will delve into the profound influence of two iconic figures in the art world, sharing personal reflections on how Morrison and Binion's work has impacted her artistic vision.

At the conclusion of this program there will be a Q&A session where the audience can pose questions to Kimberly Klauss about her creative process, the impact of her artistic influences, and the broader themes explored in her work.

About the Artist-in-Residence:

Kimberly Klauss for CADN symposium

Kimberly Klauss is a painter formerly based in Munich. She was born in the U.S. and spent time as a child in Japan, as well as most of her adult life in Germany. Her life experience as a foreigner has given rise to questions about the universal and singular experience of personhood, as well as the reliability of perception and portrayal. Working from life and photographs and often with a limited palette, her oil paintings recall the fudging all parties bring to the act of viewing and portraying. Recently she has begun including print techniques in the paintings, a result of her time as an artist in residence at Villa Lena Foundation in Italy. Kimberly’s work was introduced to a wider audience in 2017, when she was a finalist in Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year (UK). She has since shown works in the ING Discerning Eye exhibition, with Young Space, and at Compton Verney Gallery, and has paintings held in the Soho House and Ruth Borchard Next Generation Collections.
