Following Process: Collaborations in Paper
Tuesday, March 10, 2026, 5–7:30pm
Join us for an engaging conversation between master papermakers on collaborating with Ursula von Rydingsvard and Leonardo Drew in the creation of their handmade-paper artworks. These two sculptors approach papermaking in an experimental and improvisational way, following process and trusting their instincts and their collaborators in the papermaking studio. Ruth Lingen and Akemi Martin will discuss their 15-year-long collaboration with Drew at Pace Paper, which has resulted in over 100 editions of handmade-paper art to date. Tatiana Ginsberg and Amy Jacobs will explain how von Rydingsvard has developed her intimate series of unique paper-pulp works at Dieu Donné Paper Mill. Together we will learn what happens when paper pulp finds its way into the hands of sculptors. Moderated by Mina Takahashi, Editor, Hand Papermaking magazine. A Q&A will follow the panel discussion.
This program is organized in conjunction with Leonardo Drew: Alchemy and Ursula von Rydingsvard: states of becoming, on view at the Bruce Museum through May 10, 2026. Both exhibitions will be open late (between the hours of 5–6pm) for those attending the panel and light bites and refreshments will be served.
This event is $16 for members, $20 for non-members, and $12 for college students. Registration is required.

Tatiana Ginsberg
Tatiana Ginsberg studied papermaking and book arts at the University of Iowa Center for the Book and received her MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara. In between she spent two years in Japan researching naturally dyed papers under a Fulbright grant. As Director of Artistic Projects and Master Collaborator at Dieu Donné she works with other artists to make new work in handmade paper. She has written and edited books and articles on paper, including the series Papermaker’s Tears: Essays on the Art and Craft of Paper for The Legacy Press. Her own work combines traditional and contemporary methods of papermaking and is exhibited nationally and internationally. www.tatianaginsberg.art

Amy Jacobs
Amy Jacobs (she/her) received her MFA in Interdisciplinary Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College Chicago and studied for two years at Penland School of Craft as part of the Core Fellowship Program. Currently the Senior Director of Artistic Projects and Master Collaborator, she has been part of the Dieu Donné studio team since 2010. She has taught and led workshops at institutions including Yale University, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy. Using a textile-based exploration of imagery, her own work embraces traditional and experimental papermaking techniques, as well as book arts and installation.

Ruth Lingen
Ruth Lingen lives and works in New York City, where she works as a master papermaker and printer. She has collaborated with over 80 celebrated artists and writers. As the founding director of Pace Paper (a Brooklyn papermaking facility for Pace Prints) from 2008 through the present, she has worked with Leonardo Drew on dozens of editions of paper/print multiples, as well as unique and dimensional paper works. She has received lifetime achievement awards in both papermaking and the book arts.

Akemi Martin
Akemi Martin is a master papermaker, with over 17 years of professional experience collaborating with more than 40 artists and producing limited editions in the medium of handmade paper. Her work with sculptor Leonardo Drew, involving over 100 projects, has been credited with "expanding the language of printmaking." Martin started out under Paul Wong at Dieu Donné and later Ruth Lingen, who established the papermaking studio at Pace Prints, before her tenure as director of Pace Paper in New York City. Outside of artist collaborations, Martin uses the craft of handmade paper to explore her diverse passions: contemporary art, anthropology, environmental sustainability, teaching, spirituality, and social justice by delving into her Japanese-American heritage. In an era dominated by digital media, Akemi finds that papermaking offers increasingly tangible and expressive value as an art medium. She currently lives in Lincoln, MA with her spouse, two children and old dog, Caesar, and continues to consult for Pace Prints, while also teaching papermaking at both The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and Boston University.
